As cute as your baby is… it just exited your body and chances are your parts aren’t working the way they used to. Postpartum can be scary, messy, and even painful, but we’re here to help. Having the tools and resources you need at your disposal is half the battle! Check out the kits, tips, and tricks below that have helped parents like yourself get through this stage of your pregnancy. (Don’t worry, all clickable links open on a new page so you won’t lose this one!)

To The Loo

Going to the bathroom after you’ve delivered, whether you had a vaginal birth or c-section, can be uncomfortable –- to say the least. Here are a few products that can help ease the pain:

C-Section

If you have undergone this surgery to bring your little one to the world, we applaud you! We know you want to take the reins and do things yourself, but please take it easy! The more you rest, give your body the nutrients it needs to heal, and pamper your body, the faster you’ll recover. C-section scars, if not cared for properly, can lead to long-term discomfort and pain when doing day-to-day activities. The after-care tips offered here are beneficial for anyone who has undergone major abdominal surgery such as this.

  • Belly Bandit – This company provides undergarments and leggings to help you recover in the most comfortable way possible!

  • ScarAway Advanced Skincare Silicone Scar Sheets – While some embrace their scars, others would like to diminish them and that’s perfectly fine! According to the brand, you can “Begin using ScarAway as soon as the skin is healed and there is no oozing or crusting in the area. Treatment with ScarAway for post-surgical scars may typically begin 1-2 weeks after stitches are removed or when cleared by a physician or surgeon for use. For existing scars, begin using ScarAway right away, provided the skin is fully healed.” Please seek the advice of your medical professional before use.

Postpartum Undergarments

Your regular underwear may not feel as comfortable after you’ve given birth, but here are some reasonably priced options to keep your privates happy.

Sexual Healing

Regardless of whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or c-section, getting back into the swing of things sexually may not be the first thing on your mind after giving birth, but here are some products that can help you control the depth and comfort of penetration when you are ready.

  • Ohnut – Size up, these rings can be a bit snug. Helps with penetrative sex.

  • V-Magic – Vulva moisturizer that relieves dryness and soothes sensitive areas.

  • Überlube – A silicone-based lube that will keep things slippery and reduce as much friction as possible.

  • Astroglide – A lubricant that comes in a variety of bases(silicone/water) to suit your specific needs.

Professional Help

We cannot stress enough the importance of seeing a pelvic floor therapist (PFT) that listens to your needs and is proactive about addressing your concerns during pregnancy and after giving birth. You save yourself a lot of time and pain by finding out the root causes of your pain or discomfort and working with your PFT to resolve them. If your specialist is telling you to “fight through the pain” they’re not the one for you. Sadly, many women don’t have access to this important form of care and if you’re struggling with urinary incontinence, prolapse, and or painful sex, not having a solution can be emotionally and physically taxing for both you and your partner.

This online pelvic floor specialist is amazing and offers a number of online classes and one-on-one virtual sessions that may be of assistance to you.

Community

Going through pregnancy can be hard, but going at it alone is even harder. Those fortunate enough to be in your inner circle and those you meet who are pregnant or have experienced it are invaluable. Build a network of people that you can trust, that you can laugh with, that can come to your aid in case of an emergency, that are happy for you, that will encourage you, and are empathetic even when they don’t fully understand what you’re feeling. Having the right people around you at the right time can make this journey a positive experience!
