TEACHING TOOLS | A Year Unlike No Other

BY DORCA CASSEUS

I cannot believe that we already made it to September and to the Back to School Season. The summer flew by and now it’s time to gear up for another school year. However, this year will be a year unlike no other. Schools across the nation…NO, across the world, are reimagining what school will look like this year as we continue to battle the global pandemic.

While the schools in the NYC Department of Education (DOE), are starting blended learning on September 21st, many other schools, such as charters, have started their school year. Some schools are staying 100% remote for the first month of the school year and will decide at the beginning of October on whether they will open for a hybrid model.

So, what can parents expect from this school year? School leaders and teachers are working hard to create virtual classroom experiences that your child will enjoy and that will push them academically. The teachers I work with have worked tirelessly for the last few weeks to think through every detail of their virtual classroom. We have also been giving a lot of thought to how we can make up for any learning loss from last spring and the summer. While this is not an easy feat, it can be done.

It is now more crucial than ever, that parents and teachers work together as a team. Parents, be alert to the opportunities to partner with your child’s school. Schools and teachers are hosting back to school nights, orientations, and other events that will support you, as you for this unique school year.

Parents, guardians, families…what questions do you have about this upcoming school year?
