TEACHING TOOLS | UNDERSTANDING THE IEP

BY DORCA CASSEUS

We are knee-deep in the world of Special Education in New York City. In the last few articles, you learned how to begin the evaluation process for your child, what types of evaluations may be done, what happens at the initial IEP meeting and the 13 categories of special education. In this article, we will begin to dissect the actual IEP document so you can understand your child’s IEP.

The next part of the IEP is the Present Level of Performance (PLOP). This section is broken up into several parts and the majority of the IEP meeting will be spent discussing your child’s present level of performance academically, socially and physically. In the next article, we will discuss the PLOP.
