The Nitty Gritty: Who Are You Hiring?

When you’re looking to hire a caregiver for your child, being able to differentiate between the types of caregivers out there is necessary as you figure out what your needs and budget are, and is appreciated by those you interview. Here are a few types of caregivers and there respective roles…

The Babysitter

Hired for occasional short-term care like date nights, or once in a while during the month so that you can run errands.

Role: Usually follow instructions left by parent(s) regarding care for the children and is expected to make sure the children are safe until parents return.

The Au Pair (meaning “equal to” – treated as an equal or family member in the host home)

Usually a 1 year arrangement with a foreign student who attends school while living and working abroad with a host family. Family provides stipend and private room for student.

Role : Childcare and light housekeeping related to child and communal living area while attending school/college

The Nanny

Hired on full/part-time or summer basis for care of children. Full-time – approx. 40-50 hours per week Part-time – approx.16-30 hours per week Summer – Work only during the summer months

Role: Focus solely on childcare – Feeding, Nurturing, Playtime, Bring to and from School/Activities, Baths. Keep child(ren)’s eat/play/sleep space tidy.

Other types of Nannies:

Nanny Housekeeper – Fulfills the role of a nanny and also maintains the household while children are napping, at school or at an activity that doesn’t require the nanny’s presence.

Nanny House Manager – Fulfills role of nanny and also maintains the household according to family’s needs. May include, but not limited to, overseeing moves, hiring/overseeing staff and /or contractors, running errands, paying bills, making travel arrangements, managing family calendar.
